The St Bride’s Lantern Slides are portraits of Helensburgh men who enlisted and fought in The Great War. Fortunately, many of these men survived and returned home.
The Lantern Slides were found in a box in the basement of St Bride’s Church, just before it was demolished, and were removed to the Parish Church. They were recently rediscovered and notified to the War Memorial Families Project. Our team have digitally restored the portraits and a few of the slides also show Helensburgh men in training and at the Front, these appear elsewhere on this website.
Whilst these slides show many local men who survived, there are also photographs of those who perished. Most of all they show some of the young men of the town who served and whose experiences changed them forever.
